Clutch focus mk3

Featured Replies

Evening all I have a focus mk3 , 137,000 manual diesel

yesterday I had rattling when in 1/2nd gear and the clutch got stuck with the usual eggy smell. I drove to the garage who advised that I have a faulty dmf and clutch

they have just replaced that and now said the gearbox is rattling

could the initial rattle not had bee the gearbox , has the fault been misdiagnosed in the first place ?

not sure what to do next

if I new it was the gearbox , dmf and clutch I wouldn’t have done the repair

any help much appreciated

What engine and transmission do you have?

Is it a 1.6 TDCI with the manual 6-speed B6 transmission?

The Focus MK3 with 1.6 TDCI ECOnetic engine has the Ford B6 (Getrag 6MTT250) transmission.

A defective transmission is a well-known problem on the Focus MK3 with 1.6 TDCI engine. Especially on the ECOnetic version since this has an even longer final drive ratio.

This transmission relies on the splash lubrication principle. To improve fuel economy a relatively low viscosity transmission oil is used. The combination of high engine torque/low gearbox RPM's and low viscosity oil causes insufficient lubrication. On the longer term this results in excessive transmission wear and eventually failure. The first symptoms are usually noisy transmission bearings.

The 1.6 TDCI is basically the only type of engine that suffers from this problem. All other engine types that use the B6 transmission (1.0, 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost) do not have this problem at all.

In this case it is plausible that the problem has been misdiagnosed. The 1.6 TDCI has a grease dampened dual mass flywheel. Failure of this type of flywheel is extremely rare.

Being a well-known problem, the transmission itself should have been inspected before replacing the clutch and flywheel.

Is a greased DMF fully hydraulic, or does it still have springs with the grease?  We are seeing more of these fail since they've passed 10 years old.  This one definitely sounds sprung with no signs of grease leakage.
