Focus 09 leak from steering rack

Featured Replies

Hi, my car has been leaking for the last 3 weeks. I've had the boot issue fixed and now that is dry.

The issue now is I'm still getting wet drivers footwell, and it's coming from the bottom of the steering rack. Only happens when it's heavy rain, somehow its getting in the car. Does anyone have any idea where to look and how to fix this please?

Ive attached a screenshot from a video I took for reference.

Thanks in advance.

Is it rainwater (no smell) or coolant (smells)?

If rainwater I would suspect that the windscreen isn't sealed properly to the bodywork. If coolant it isn't far from the heater matrix and the pipes which feed that. Water tends to run along metalwork and appear some distance away from the actual leak.

Edited to delete the irrelevant bits after I read your post properly. 🙂

The guys at the garage who said they fixed it by sealing a pipe that goes in to the heater matrix. Since then my cabin gets extremely hot like never before.

Before that though he did mention it could be the window, because there was condensation spots at the bottom. Also the scuttle doesn't sit flush to the window and flaps about.

Is it a case of getting the window refitted/resealed then? Feel like I'm paying people to pretend to fix the issue 😞

Thanks.

Dry it up as best you can then play a hosepipe around the edges of the windscreen and see if it comes back. I understand that most insurance policies include replacement of windscreens, which could break at any time, for the cost of a small excess.

I've tried with a jet wash and let the water drip over the front of the car, I can't replicate it. It's like it's only rain water with access.

Does claiming for a new windscreen affect no claims? So if someone puts your window in over night would they replace for that reason?

Thanks.

If the problem isn't coming from the windscreen then the only other place I can think of would be the seal where the steering column passes through the bulkhead. I've never had that apart. There are others on here with more experience than me who can hopefully pick this up.

After being in the garage 3 times the rain is still somehow getting in through the steering rack. Does anyone else have any idea what to do here?
