Focus mk 2.5 10 reg 1.6 tdci titanium

Featured Replies

My car just passed it's mot , with an advisory that rear  ns  tyre needs replacing asap. It was  very worn on the inside

but not so much on the outside .I replaced the tyre and asked for tracking to be done .

The (reliable) tyre   place said that  the rear  tracking is seized and needs new arms and bolts .

Is this an expensive  job  please anyone ?

I had the drop links done a year ago and the mechanic had a hell of a time getting them off.

thx  in advance 😉

The new parts aren't expensive, but as with the drop links, you'll have to pay a lot of labour to remove the old rusty parts first.

Thanks for the reply  Tom  👍

I have asked   the local garage  for an estimate for this job , (it might be that they dont want the job 'cos they  did  my drop links  last year and could nt get them off easily)  , and they came back with an estimate of  £763.87p .That seems extortionate to me .

The same garage has been reliable otherwise .

i have gone for a 2nd opinion but no reply  as yet from the other garage .

What does anyone else think please ?

ford focus mk 2.5  1.6tdci titanium  177k miles .

the car is crabbing  a little when going around corners.

If you want my honest opinion, at 177k miles I wouldn't think it's economically viable to repair.  Now it's got MOT if just drive it and put the money towards another car before the MOT expires.

That quote does seem high, it can be done much cheaper than that.  I suspect they've quoted for genuine Ford parts.  You can buy a set of bolts for £10 and a pair of arms for £40.  (These are just the first two on eBay, may not be exactly right for your model).

Cheap job if you can do it yourself.  But realistically looking at around 4 hours garage labour if they're really rusty.  (Approx £320).

Then you'll need front and rear wheel alignment which is likely to be around £75 nowadays.

You are thinking of spending what ??????

At that mileage the whole car could fall apart next month. The engine is certainly on the edge of extinction. Time to start and look at replacing it with something like a nice 1.0 Ecoboost engine 😉

Well besides  the tracking (it is crabbing a bit) , it drives like a dream , is economical , i love it , and i know for certain that some of these  1.6tdci do  over 200k.in some cases they do  240k  and still running .

I do 9k annually

I dont have a lot of spare cash

And i dont much like the mk3  which would logically be the next car.

thx for the replies .😶

I made that mistake in 2018.  The Mk3 is not the same as a Mk2...not even close!  Sold it within 6 months and moved to another brand.  I then made the same mistake again in 2020 buying a Mk4 Focus.  Nothing links these cars except the name!

My Mk2 1.6 TDCI was scrapped at 110k (I sold it myself at 80k as no longer economical to repair) so yours has definitely done well to reach 177k.

It's not really about 'doing' the mileage, it's about how much you have to spend on cambelts and clutches, DPFs & EGRs, rust repairs, etc to keep them going.  BUT, if you like the car and can't see anything to replace it with, then it's your choice to spend the money however you think best.

Thx for the reply , there is a bit of rust   in o/s  rear wheel  arch , but besides  the  tracking issue , i'm not aware of any probs , it still has original clutch  and starter motor .Some people on here  would not think thats possible .at 177k miles . I asked the mechanic last year 'how is the clutch' and he checked and  said it's good.

Tom can i ask what do you drive now ?  I enjoy the  deisil fuel economy . low tax and comfort/extras of  the  titanium .I'm over 70 and only planning for next  5 years .  🙃

I haven't been able to drive at all for the past few years unfortunately.  The last car I drove long term was a Mk6 VW Golf for 3.5 years.  2.0 TDI 140.  £30 tax.  50+mpg.  All the same extras as the Mk2 Focus Titanium (cruise control, auto lights & wipers, 4 auto windows, dimming mirror, DAB/SD/Bluetooth).  Bit more comfort and refinement, slightly better build quality.  The boot is a bit smaller.  Generally the drive was very similar to the Mk2 Focus though.  The Focus looks better from outside, I never did like the look of the MK6 Golf.
