Storm flood damage alternator replacement

Featured Replies

Fellas, been a hell of a day with this storm but along the coast we had floods and had to drive through a deep one to get access to the main road.

Long story short car went through ok then battery light came on, it did go out for a few miles then came back on.

The alternator voltage is was 14.6 before this now it's just 13.6 /13.7 so I think it's had some water damage and needs replacing.

Rang local autoparts and they said there are two listed for this car? One listed for a model with an auxiliary heater and one without?

Does anyone know if this model has an auxiliary heater or not so I know which one to get?

Thanks in advance

13.6V is the default voltage when the Smart charging circuit is not available.

Personally I'd let the alternator dry out for 24 hours. Maybe try getting some heat in and around it. It could very well make a full recovery.

Just be thankful you don't have an EV 🤣

Thanks Uno.

I leave it over night and look at it tomorrow when the winds and rain settle here.

I'm 100% grateful I don't have a EV 🤣

Will update tomorrow 👍

So update time.

This morning started car and no battery light. Charging was reading 14.7v apx then after about 4 min of idling battery light is on and charge rate is 13.6v.

I have drove various journeys as usual today but the fan is coming on and staying on. Engine is not overheating and there doesn't seem to be any form of regen ect taking place.

I let car sit untill engine cold and started it and same thing. Battery light on, voltage dropped to 13.6v and fan stays on.

This evening I had a look under and apart from damage to the under shield there doesn't seem to be any other water damage ect to any if the connections or wires. I took part each connection and cleaned them with electrical contact cleaner and ect and even had the battery disconnected when doing then and when all was rebuilt it still doing the same.

Still having same issues since so plugged in for scan and for the following codes.

Codes are as follows

- Pcm u0284 lost communication with a active grill shutter module A

- pcm u012d lost communication with generator A control module

-pcm u0120 lost communication with starter/ generator

Looking these up online pointed towards damage maybe on the grill shutter connection or wire so I unplugged it yesterday and the battery light is no longer coming on but the coolant fan is still constantly.

I have made about 12 mixed journeys since unplugging the grill shutter with the battery light out and the coolant fan on.

Car is starting and driving ok and now my Auto start stop seems to be working which is never did before. This is strange.

Over weekend I'm going to remove the front bumper and check all the lower wiring again.

I probably will clean the earth points and then the engine bay fuse box for any type of corrosion as well.

Really at a loss with this but I now don't think either the battery or alternator is faulty I think it may be wiring or a connector somewhere.

Will update as I go.
