Ford Focus MK3 1.6 TDCi Fuel Injectors - £1,700 to repair!?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me here.

My Focus recently broke down on the dual carriageway. After roadside assistance arrived, they advised that codes were being thrown on injectors 2 and 3, stating the following: "MIL light on and severe power loss with a rough running engine. Interrogate fault memory and faults identified with No 2 & 3 injectors.". I was towed back to my local garage and received a phone call this morning saying estimated cost of repairs is going to be £1.7k!. They said that due to how the injectors are coded in they have to replace all 4, as previous customers have had issues with one or two being replaced and the engine still running rough. (The injectors costing about £200 each!)

Is this something that anyone else has run into?

A bit of research online said that since two have failed at the same time, it could be wiring related, and that the loom may have a damaged cable from the ECU, resulting in unexpected voltage spikes/dips. Does this seem like a more reasonable cause than two injectors failing at the same time?

I've had the car less than a year but it has done over 125k miles. Am I reaching EOL, shall I repair, or shall I try and get a new car?

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Welcome!
Injectors, depending on maker, treatment etc can go 150k miles or more?
£1.7k when injectors cost, you say, £200 is a hell of a lot of labour!
I'd confirm the fault codes with Forscan which can code injectors.
If you move and recode the injectors, does the fault move (injectors) or stay in same cylinders (wiring) - that will take some labour but is another option.
Can existing injectors be refurbished and tested by a specialist at that age?
With that estimate, I'd get another?

It sure is, but then would you like to take a chance of removing 4 off 21 year old injectors ?

I suspect the garage really don't want the job, but if they have to do it then they want to cover themselves for if it starts to go wrong.

As you say, they don't want the job!
