2015 Focus 1.6 TDCi – one-off limp mode / power loss

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First post here. Looking for some real-world feedback before I throw money at this.

Car: 2015 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi ~154,000km Titanium

What happened:

About a week ago, driving on the motorway at steady speed (120kmph) with cruise control on, the car briefly lost power and showed “Service Engine Now”, Followed by an unhealthy vibration. Cruise disengaged. I pulled over, restarted, and the car drove completely normally after that. No repeat since. Tried to recreate the issue on the motorway/dual carriage way on the way home no luck.

No rough idle, no smoke, starts fine hot and cold.

Codes found with FORScan (manufacturer level):

• P02D0 – Cylinder 3 injector offset learning at minimum limit (historical)

• P02D2 – Cylinder 4 injector offset learning at minimum limit (historical)

• P02D3 – Cylinder 4 injector offset learning at maximum limit (older event)

• P037D – Glow plug sense circuit (intermittent, cold start only) (un related id imagine but there none the less, Makes sense because the car takes a second to turn on when i press the button)

No active OBD2 emissions codes now. CEL is off.

The injector codes are not present now, Only one timestamp was near the time of the incident (i also cleared them and i plan to scan again soon), only logged once. Cylinder 4 has actually hit both min and max limits at different times, which seems odd.

Mechanic’s view:

Mechanic thinks the injector that hit the minimum limit is “starting to go” and recommends injector replacement as the next step.

Why I’m unsure:

• It only happened once and hasn’t repeated in a week

• Multiple cylinders were affected

• No hard injector symptoms (idle, smoke, starting)

• No active faults now

I’m wondering if this could be something like:

• Dirty MAF / air measurement issue

• EGR sticking briefly

• Boost/air plausibility issue under load

Or something else.

rather than an injector actually failing. Has anyone any suggestions they would be much appreciated. The mechanic also thinks i should just drive it around until it happens again, although id rather be proactive. Thanks!

From the above, I ASSUME (?) you read the (historic?) codes after the incident and also after the ignition had been turned off?
Therefore, I'm with the mechanic on this one i.e, read codes when the fault occurs without switching off..
Like you, I aim to be proactive but, at the moment, you would be floundering in the dark - where would you start with your current lack of hard evidence?
Good to have cleared all the codes.

Thanks for the reply. Il do this next time. Do you think it safe to keep the engine on since last time it felt like it was very aggresively vibrating side to side.

That sounds like serious misfire?
Whilst it will be upsetting and unless others say no, I believe it is the only way to get the codes to give you a real clue where to start.
I have purchased a Bluetooth adapter to allow speedy investigation via mobile app for my glowplug issue which is obviously very short term/transient.
Obviously your choice.
