Is the wiring for the indicator stalk the same on all Mk2s?

Featured Replies

As the title says. I have seen a late pre-facelift Mk2 1.6 Petrol Zetec in a breakers. They say I can buy the cluster for £35.

This car has the cluster type with the menu that can be selected from the indicator stalk button.

It also has the orange backlight which I would prefer over the factory fitted green.

Could that cluster be programmed to my LX spec car?

Assuming it can, the indicator stalk with the extra buttons would also have to be fitted.

The LX has a reset button on the cluster for the digital odometer, but nothing on the indicator stalk.

Thanks for any info.

Wiring is all the same.

The instrument cluster is also fully compatible. It only needs to be configured correctly (can be done with ELMconfig) and the PATS immobilizer system needs to be programmed and paired/initialized (can be doen with Forscan).

It is important that the mileage of the instrument cluster is lower than your car since it can only be changed upwards easily.

I recommend to also take all buttons/switches with red illumination from the same donor car. These will also be plug and play.

Why not upgrade to the MK2.5 instrument cluster which is much better looking and is also fully compatible with the MK2?

Thanks for the reply.

I have already changed all of the other buttons and switches to orange. I would choose the earlier type cluster as I don't like the look of the silver plastic on the Mk2.5 type.

Does the programming of the keys change anything inside the key transponder chips?

I am asking this to know if I could simply swap back to the original cluster with no programming if anything went wrong.

Is there anyone on here who I could pay to program it if I brought the car to them? I would rather not have to buy the software or cables.

The instrument cluster is an integral part of the PATS immobilizer system.

The PATS system of the Focus MK2 consists of the instrument cluster, PCM and the transponder keys. The transponder codes are stored inside the EEPROM memory of the instrument cluster. Apart from the transponder codes, the instrument cluster is also synchronized/paired with the PCM.

The PCM can only be synchronized/paired with a single instrument cluster. This means that after the instrument cluster has been changed and the PATS immobilizer system is programmed the original instrument cluster will no longer work to start the car.

Once the PATS programming is performed there is no way back. Therefore, I strongly recommend to first add a new key to make sure that PATS programming works. This does not involve any risks. If this fails it will just not add the new key.

I see the exact same thing.

Strange.  Works fine here in England.

It seems that many of the free image hosting websites do not want to comply to the strict laws in relation to age verification and child data protection that are applicable in only a few countries.

They just decided to block the content for these countries instead. The rest of the world can see the content.

So, no worries. It is not the government dictating what the citizens are allowed / not allowed to see.

Yes Tom, that's one of the many reasons I voted against the Scottish Parliament 😁

Thanks for the reply. I have another spare remote key from a scrapped Mk2. This could be added as a test.

Am I correct that the remote unlocking is separate and programmed to the BCM? I programmed the remote unlock on the spare key to work using the instructions in the manual.

Any used MK2/MK2.5 key can be programmed. It only needs the correct keyblade that matches the key code of the locks. For testing however you can also use the keyblade of one of the other keys to operate the ignition switch during the programming procedure.

The remote locking/unlocking is indeed completely separate from the PATS immobilizer system. The remote locking/unlocking functionality is programmed into the GEM (the MK2/MK2.5 does not have a BCM) and the PATS immobilizer functionality is programmed into the IPC.
