Use FORScan and get the Ford specific codes.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

Based on our  recent 4 Cyl 2011 2.0  DW10C
At the module, check that you have power, earth and same resistance to all glow plugs (0.5 Ohm?)
There are usually 8 pins for 4 cylinder engines (sometimes more if more cylinders - check wiring diagram)

  • 12V
  • Earth (Both heavy duty from a large fuse)
  • One lead to each glowplug (sightly thinner)
  • Two thin leads to PCM

In Forscan live data (after checking for codes)  there may be GLWPREL parameters one commanded, other feedback.
When triggered, Glowplug light comes on (But may not stay on for as long as the heating process), Commanded goes high to ON, Feedback is a PWM signal.
If there is a GPC_DC (Duty Cycle) it remains blank, never changes on mine.
Also record ambient, air and coolant temperatures for sanity, if these are faulty, PCM may think engine or ambient temp  is warm.
Check for any burnt contacts at the socket or signs of melting on the wires that go into it.

Another v. useful step is to use a clamp meter on the supply and individual plugs and Dan shows some useful hints:

It used to be a simple relay ON, all plugs switched on, time delay depending on temperature.
Now each plug is switched separately by a MOSFET with a logic chip taking a signal from the PCM, feeding back the system state and any fault codes.

That's my current understanding!
