Focus MK3.5 - screen washers only on rear even if front used

Featured Replies

We have a Foucs MK3.5 and only a few days ago the washer jets only work on the rear no matter if the rear or front washer jets are selected, and with the weather as it is at the moment, it is a pain in the backside.

Having read some threads already, it could be either the stalk on the wheel or blocked / sludge at the bottom of the bottle however given where the screen washer reserviour is in the engine bay, it's not the easiest thing to get to to check especially when it looked like the front OffSIde wheel needs to be removed and access is via the wheel arch, chuffing modern cars!

Has anyone else has this issue? What was the resolution? I have a feeling it might need a garage to look at fixing this problem. In my naivety, it is like a relay or something is stuck. I really hope it's not the selector stalk.

I'd hope it's just the stalk, that's the cheapest and easiest thing to replace.

The same pump works front and rear, so I doubt it's a sludge blockage in this case.  Almost certainly electrical.

Are you saying that the rear screen washer sprays water even when you select the front wash ?

If the answer is yes, then the non-return valve in the pump has failed. A new pump can be bought on eBay for less than £30. You need to remove the inner wheel arch liner to get at the pump.

Thank you both for your comments, was told by the Mrs that both front and rear are working are working as expected this morning 🤔.

I took a look at it Saturday afternoon and rightly so, if the stalk was pulled towards the steering wheel, you'd expect the front jets to come on, but actually the rear jet came on. Push the stalk away from the steering wheel, the rear came on (as expected).

Will monitor to see how this goes. Part of me things something had frozen with the cold weather we've been having as today it's suddenly turned almost tropical (10°C) for January.

Parts of me were frozen on Saturday 🤣

Ooooh Matron!
