Mk2.5 estate rear LED lights

Featured Replies

Has anyone replaced the original LED bulb (1490659) with better LED light? It's way too dim for my liking.

No because it's not an LED, it is an ordinary 21W tungsten filament lamp.

The only LED on the rear of a Mk2.5 is for the 'tail light'.  And even then only if you have high spec lights.  Brake, reverse, fog and indicator are all filament bulbs.

The LED tail strip on the high spec lights is integrated in the cluster.  It is not replaceable.

I have the fancy version, because my front lights are HIDs. It's almost maxed out Titanium.

For some reason it's listed as an LED bulb by Ford.

It's also listed as an LED light on Catcar.info

I'll just take them apart when it's not this cold and see what's what.

Yes I can see the confusion. Why they have put the word 'LED' in there is anyone's guess.

They list it as the "LED" bulb because on a non-LED tail lamp the stop/tail is a twin filament 21/5w Red Bulb.

In the LED it's just a red 21w bulb as the LED panel is the side light

Same ones I had, albeit on a hatch.  They weren't standard on Titanium.  Only if you had the X pack which included Xenons, powerfold mirrors and full heated leather interior as well.

The LED tail lights should illuminate both top and bottom of the cluster.  The bulb you've linked is single filament for brake only, that only illuminates half the cluster when the brake is pressed.  The other half is illuminated by the indicator bulb.  Not the best pic as it's obviously daylight but this is what the taillights alone should look like.

I’ve got the LED spec lights on my ST3 - worth checking which bulb you’ve got fitted currently as the brake bulbs on mine were an unusual fitment.

Not sure of the bulb code but the locator pins are staggered rotationally and offset vertically too.

I had to modify the pins on the aftermarket LED’s I fitted

It's a 782 bulb on the LED version.  Or a 780 bulb on the non-LED version.  Both use off-set pins to be awkward.

Mine blew 2 brake bulbs in 3 years...both just before MOT!

Thanks for that explanation Dave, now it makes sense 👍
