MK3 Wet footwells, but it’s not the rear vents?

Featured Replies

Hi all, long time no see!
Still got the focus and she’s coming up for 167’000 miles!

Here’s the issue - both passenger and drivers footwells front and rear are soaking wet! Carpets coming out at the weekend and I’ll dry it all out but not really sure where to start looking for the ingress though. Rear vents were done as has the roof seams due to ingress in the past. The boot and all its trims under the spare wheel etc is bone dry. No sign of ingress through the doors and the door drains are clear all door seals are intact and the headliner is dry as well with no signs of a leak. The only place I can find water is under the carpet.

Where would guys look next? I’m going to have a look under the scuttle cover and re seal behind the wiper motors as I know that can be a problem area but aside from that I’m stumped!

To be honest I've just about had enough myself. Resealed my bumper vents and once again the boot and carpets are soaking. Another 2 litres in the boot well.

I'm guessing your coolant is ok?

I gave up looking for the cause on my focus and just dealt with the symptoms in the end. Went underneath (rear end) was going to drill holes but simply removed one (possibly two) bungs near each wheel. Two and a half years later, no dampness, all is well.

Two mates said to just get rid of the car at the time, delighted I didnt

Coolant is all good, I did the bumper vents a few years ago and all was good for about a year then it got wet again, I thought it was the vents again but turned out to be cracked sealant at the roof joins, did them and it’s been dry in the back ever since. Ironically it’s currently the only bit of my interior that is dry at the minute 😂

I left the bungs out after doing the vents the only thing I can currently think of is that there is a section of road near mine ( rural Suffolk ) that is flooded 90% of the time approx 3-6” deep I used to drive through it twice a day so I’m wondering if enough got in them bung holes to run in towards the front of the car before getting a chance to get into the boot.

Are there any holes in the chassis at the front of a Mk3?  I drove through floodwater in a Mk6 Fiesta once and watched the water flow into the passenger side front footwell as I did that! 😬

Can't remember the same happening on either Mk2 or Mk3 Focus but that doesn't mean it didn't.

Are you sure the door seals are all definitely in place underneath?  Must be the only Mk3 left with the seals still fully intact and firmly stuck on if so.

Ahhh good point I'll need to remember to avoid deep puddles/floods!

There are some bungs in the front footwell but they are under the sound deadening so I don’t think it’ll be them. The door seals I glued back on a couple of years ago and they are still holding up strong as far as I can see! I’m stripping the interior out tomorrow and I’ll get one of the kids to hosepipe the car while I’m sat in the empty shell 😂
