Faulty fuel pressure regulator? Mk2 1 6l petrol

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a mk2 1.6l petrol automatic.

Got white smoke coming out of exhaust which smells of fuel. Also mpg has dropped to the fuel.

AA call out reckons fuel injector.

I have pulled off the rubber fuel hose and it's saturated in fuel inside so I'm thinking possible faulty fuel pressure regulator?

I've also found 2nd hand fuel injector rails online with injectors.

Where is the regulator and what does it look like? Is it replaceable?

Thanks

This particular engine doesn't have a fuel pressure regulator that you can see.  It's part of the fuel pump inside the tank.  For that reason, the pump is very expensive.

White fuel exhaust smoke on an older petrol like this is often caused by a faulty MAP sensor.  That's the part I'd change first with these symptoms.  Injectors don't fail often on these, but as you say, you can pick up a set of those on the rail cheaply.  You will probably need to replace the o-ring seals on a used set of injectors.

I don't understand which pipe you've checked.  The fuel pipe should be saturated with fuel.

Thatll teach me not to trust AI! Yes I might agree with you as when I cleaned the map sensor last week no smoke and mpg went up. Only took 3 days for smoke to come back and mpg to drop. Might be worth looking at map sensor first then.

I have cleaned MAP sensor and the white smoke and smell of petrol has disappeared from exhaust. It had a bit of oil on it which I suspect is because the crankcase breather sponge (the tiny sponge in air filter box) wasn't changed with air filter at last service. I think I'll grab a little sponge for that anyways and monitor the MAP sensor and possibly replace it. It looks ancient, probably the original one.
