Auxiliary Belt Slapping

Featured Replies

Hello

I own a Ford Focus 2012 2.0 TDCI 140PS E5-H

Around 6 months ago I replaced an Auxiliary belt and it has recently been making a slapping sound.

I removed the wheel and liner to visually inspect and the belt is loose, slapping as it turns.

Whats the likely cause of this issue?

Crankshaft pulley? Tensioner? Alternator pulley?

I have a video also but im not sure how to post it.

Thanks

Rob

Hi, the tensioner should be holding enough tension on the belt not to slap. That's the main suspect here.

However a weak tensioner could also be highlighting a jerky pulley, so I wouldn't rule that out yet.

Oh that's interesting. It looks like the outer half of the crank pulley is sagging down, not central around the shaft. Does it look the same in real life or is that just the picture angle?

These pulleys can fail as they have a rubber damper between the two metal halves. Usually they knock and rattle though, which yours doesn't seem to be doing.

That crank pully isnt centred correctly. I would take it off and see if its starting to seperate.

another cause of this can be the overrun pulley on the altenator.

Thank you

I think you are right guys, it looks a bit messed up.

It would be a simple fix for me except having to deal with locking cams to tighten the bolt back up.

You probably know this already but if not if you take the Pully Bolt out it would be very wise to replace it with a new one and if any Locking Compound has been used then use a Thread Cutting Tap to clear the rubbish out or cut the Thread of the cleaned old Bolt with a Hacksaw three or four times lengthwise and use that to clean the Thread.

The old Bolt looks quite new, so someone may have had it off recently.
