Focus MK2 RKE "Programming PATS Failed"

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I have a 2007 Ford Focus MK2, which originally has the RKE keyless system. I replaced the instrument cluster with the one from a Ford Focus MK2.5. Now, I’m unable to program the RKE remote buttons — I get a 'PATS Programming Failed' message. I was able to program the transponder directly to the cluster and can start the car, but the remote buttons still won’t program.

Did you configure the MK2.5 instrument cluster properly?

RKE Keyless vehicles have the PATS functionality fully handled by the RKE module.
Vehicles with a regular ignition switched have the PATS functionality handled by the instrument cluster.

On a RKE Keyless vehicle the PATS functionality of the instrument cluster needs to be switched off. Failing this will result in PATS issues because both the RKE module and instrument cluster try to control the PATS functionality.

Apart from that the MK2.5 has a different RKE protocol from the older MK2. The MK2.5 instrument cluster does support the older MK2 protocol but it needs to be configured manually.

Basically, I use ElmConfig and copy my old cluster configuration to the new cluster. However, I noticed that in ElmConfig, under the HEC section, there is a dropdown where I can choose the PAT type. Which option should I select?

Also, I configured the PATs for the key directly on the cluster. Do I need to delete them and configure everything through RKE instead?

I have updates
I switched the cluster back to the original MK2 cluster, and followed this process:

-> Delete existing keys in the IC;

-> Add commands to the RKE module;

-> Initialize the RKE module;

-> Add keys to the IC;

-> Initialize the IC.

Everything worked as before, but with the new cluster, the RKE module can perform security access, but I can't add the RKE commands to the IC. Perhaps it's a configuration error in my Focus MK2.5 IC.
