Engine Malfunction Warning - 2011 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Diesel

Featured Replies

Hi all, been having this issue for around a year I think with my Focus. Whilst I'm driving, it will come up with 'Engine Malfunction'. A couple of times, its gone into limp mode, but mostly nothing else happens, and I just pull over and turn the car off and on and its back to normal. This first happened about a year ago and there has been weeks where its not happened but recently it feels like most times I drive it, I get this message. One time recently the power steering went also, but was fine once I turned it off and on. It seems to happen more when I am getting up to speed, if I'm overtaking or going onto the motorway.

Recently, it had to get recovered, power steering went, and every time we'd restart it would fail. Garage replaced alternator & drive belt , but other than that said the engine was in good nick. I thought this would put an end to this issue, but still getting it, other than that it drives fine.

My dad had a code reader, so we tried that, images attached. The biggest fault that came back was U1900-20, with the Can bus. Along with some other faults which we were able to clear.

Just looking for any insight really what the cause could be, or if anyone else has had this issue. I don't want to take it to a garage without understanding what the issue could be.

Thanks

Hi,

U1900 is a common fault, often caused by plugging in a scantool, so that isn't a helpful code on its own.

We can't see any other codes on the photos provided.

If there were many different U codes and this is a late Mk2.5 Focus then we would suspect poor solder joints on the cluster. Here is a link to another thread on the same subject right now.

If the faults were not mostly U codes, and PCM codes were about fuel pressure, then chances are it just needs a new fuel filter.

from looking at those, the maority are caused by the abs fault. probably an abs sensor, as most of the affected systems in that list run off the abs system.

you will need forscan or a better diagnostic tool to show the abs module faults, which will show which sensor it is.
