DAB Radio update to DAB+

The local news (Luxembourg in my case) has recently announced that DAB+ services started (in a limited fashion) in December 2025. The news articles talk about "DAB+ replacing FM" but there's little about what will happen to DAB as and when DAB+ becomes available.

My understanding having read elsewhere is that older DAB radios (mine is 2019) will not support DAB+ and that the differences between the two are significant enough that new hardware will be required (rather than a firmware/software update).

Can anyone confirm this?

My guess is that Ford will not be offering an upgrade service.

    IMHO, DAB in UK is a total mess and was supposed to replace FM 10 or 15 years ago?
    Then DAB+ was mooted with previous generation not being backwards compatible.
    It hasn't happened AFAIK.
    A bit like the Smart meter fiasco with two generations SMETS 1 & 2 which were incompatible etc etc.
    I hope Luxembourg do it better and being a relatively small country, it may even work everywhere!

    Some UK stations are DAB+ only now, seem to remember they switched around 2019. I had to buy a new kitchen radio to pick up the stations I wanted. But there are still plenty on old DAB and FM as well.

    Ford won't be offering an upgrade, they'll want to sell you a whole new car! However, a 2019 model may be DAB+ compatible anyway. I have a Mk7 Golf that picks up DAB+ on the standard system.
