static re-gen - c max / forscan

Featured Replies

In all the time of owning the 1.6 tdci c max I have never noticed it doing a dpf re-gen, I fancied doing a forced re-gen via for scan to see if it makes the car any better , just wondered if this is safe enough or do I risk ***** something off ?

Doing a Static Regeneration is a last resort if you have a problem. If your car hasn't done a Regeneration before you would have a Fault Code.

As said, best avoided as the extreme temperatures can cause the core to crack and you definitely don't want that, do you?
If it ain't broke etc (better to monitor pressures and distances between regens if you are OCD, like me 😉)

How do you do that ??

Ta

As you state you have Forscan, I'd look at the tutorials by SY Diagnostics:
https://www.youtube.com/@sydiagnostics2025/playlists
In the live data section, you can set up multiple PIDs (sensors etc) to monitor and the names make it obvious.
Using the App, you can send the output to your email or the laptop version can also save any details.
Much better to spend a bit of time understanding everything so that you can monitor and use the information to solve any future problems?

I will look into this, a few weeks back I observed a mate using a licenced copy of for scan de-activate TPMS on the c max alongside activate drive away locking. I re-call there was an option in the menu somewhere to switch on a light on the dash to indicate when a re-gen was in process - I will look into this as that would be helpful.

Cheers

I've never seen this on any diesel car so far. It would be useful.

On my 'non-Ford' there was a dash warning for when a regen was in progress, but not a DPF shaped light. It was the only time the gearchange indicator constantly recommended I change down a gear. Outside of regen it only ever recommended changing up gears.

I have done a few forced regens without any problems. Wouldn't be concerned about doing another. However, I wouldn't do it just for the sake of it, only if I'd proven that there was a considerable soot accumulation first.

If the differential pressure was still high after using a foam cleaner then that may be the only option.
Another danger is that resetting the DPF parameters in an attempt to start a regen is that the temperatures go too high leading to a thermal shutdown (if you are lucky, you'll avoid cracking)
Obviously, as you can always tell, I'm averse to forced regens and have never needed to do one and don't want to!
I don't want to be liable (Ha Ha!) in any way, hence my conservative posts.
Ours doesn't seem to have any specific regen indicator so interested in that although it would seem unnecessary as, for most owners it would only cause alarm?
Does this model have a vaporiser?
What are MOT rules on the annoying TPMS deactivation?

The very latest Fords show a warning message when the DPF/GPF is getting full. "Drive to Clean". So I can see how a regen light would help these drivers keep the engine running as long as necessary, rather than cutting it off mid-regen.

I must admit that I found cDPF's on later models to work effectively even when doing only short town journeys. The car I mentioned above only did short journeys during 2020/21 and hasn't been driven at all for nearly 5 years after that. Just idled on the driveway occasionally. I had it taken to MOT last year, less than 5 miles on 30mph roads, and surprisingly it completed a regen on the return journey! Unfortunately the driver wasn't familiar with regens, and switched it off while the fan was still running at max speed, so I thought I was going to have to force a regen on the driveway a few days later. But when I plugged it in, the soot loading was virtually nothing, and the distance since last regen was 0 miles, so it must have just completed on that journey after all. (Sorry for the tangent there ha!)

1.6 TDCI does not use a vaporiser. Post-injection only.

MOT manual suggests a car should only fail if the TPMS light shows a fault. It does not mention anything about the light not coming on at all. Bit of a loop hole but makes it very difficult for the tester to fail with TPMS deactivated.
