Rev blips 300rpm after coolant leak.

Featured Replies

Hi all, hope you are well

I have a 2020 Focus Estate Diesel 1.5 which whilst driving lost all its coolant, Thermostat Housing just failed and dumped it all.

I stopped almost immediately and had it towed to a garage.

They fixed it.

But i now notice that whilst driving at a steady pace, say 70mph the revs will "blip" about 300 rpm without any noticeable engine note change.

I;ve checked a few things on google and most point to Torque convertor clutch slip.

I was wondering if anyone else had this issue before and what symptoms you were seeing, why would this happen after a coolant leak,

Any ideas

Cheers all

Hi,

If anything in that area is damaged then it would not really be a surprise. The thermostat housing is directly above the gearbox. If all the coolant came out of there it could easily have got inside the bellhousing and contaminated the torque converter.

Many thanks for the reply, It is booked into the garage next week, 7 days time, do you think driving it could cause a lot of damage and i should park it up until the garage look at it?

No. The lock up clutch is really only there to improve fuel economy. If that's knackered then the damage is already done and won't get any worse. From the symptom you describe I would continued to drive it as normal. Obviously if you get any further symptoms then reconsider.

UPDATE - Here is a link to a video i took of the issue (taken by my passenger).

Took it to a garage and they just "reset" everything but it made no difference.

I am on a flat road at 70mph on cruise control and this is the "rev blip" I am experiencing.

Thanks for anymore help, does this look like Torque Lock issue.
