Insurance rip off

Featured Replies

Had a smashed windscreen ( stone flew up) replaced in 2023 on my Ecosport ,0but in error when filling form in for GoCompare insurance quote after being with LV for years, ticked ' no claims in past 5 yrs' as had forgotten about it.

After getting a good quote from Hastings i double checked my answers ,then corrected the form with claim details, it upped the quote by £180 , at this rate i may as well have paid for it myself and not put a claim , seems having windscreen cover included on a policy does not prevent ongoing insurance penalties, anyone else on the forum had the same issue , or is it the norm ?

In my experience insurers do treat it as a claim, but not necessarily in the same way as other claims, and individual insurers practices may vary. I had a run of windscreen damage some years back (I thought the car was jinxed!) but suffered no loss of NCD or (as far as I could tell) subsequent premium hikes because of it. I was with Churchill at the time.

Normally if using a quote platform I select the likely candidates and then get a quote direct from them, rather than continuing on the platform. You often get an even better quote by cutting out the middleman, as well as.ensuring you get the full cover you require. Might be worth trying direct with Hastings, including all the correct details.

Your post is a good reminder for all of us to check everything carefully. Insurers may well be less generous now than a few years ago in their treatment of windscreen claims, as a way of reducing "headline" prices.

it'll be interesting to see other members comments on this one.

Thanks for that interesting posting Eric.

After getting the updated quote online i did in fact call Hastings ( South Africa based call centre !), but got quote only £5 cheaper!

Was going to go with another low quote from an outfit called 'Darwin' ,until i read some horror negative reviews which scared me off, so stayed with LV for better or worse, at least they use UK based agents to talk to.

A little bit off track but insurance company related. I am with direct line. Back in 2023 I got reversed into, left hand rear panel. Did all the good things exchanging ins details. At this point he admitted it was his fault. Paid my £400 loading and got it repaired. Two months ago direct line contacted me and said his ins company took responsibility and I was refunded the £400. 2024 saw my ins shoot up and remained high, into 2025. I have been thinking of moving companies when it is due this year.

Then this week I get this.

We're really sorry we've made a mistake. We incorrectly calculated your car insurance price based on the claim(s) you made during March 2023 , because of this we charged you too much for your insurance when you renewed your policy and your No Claim Discount may have been affected.

We are refunding you £397.83 ,and you will receive this within the next 10 working days. (The refund may be sent to you over multiple payments).

Might stay with them.

Bit more to add to my above. Wife driving licence due renewal. Decided, on advise from doctor, not to renew. Notified Direct Line to remove wife from policy. That cost me £46.14 on a policy that expires 30 June. Hate to think what her removal will add to next years policy.

Hi.

When your policy is due for renewal if you need any help with insurance then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.
