Ford Kuga Engine Not Starting or Turning Over

Featured Replies

Hi,

So I have been having an absolute nightmare with cars recently and the nightmare is continuing.

I had DPF issues with a Nissan Juke with other MOT failures with a quote price of around £2.5k to fix so I sold that and bought a Ford Kuga 2013 Titanium X with 109k miles in the hope it would last 18 months - 2 years until I am in a better position to buy a decent car after moving house.

I bought the vehicle around 2 weeks ago and the garage (small independent) agreed to replace the timing belt as there was no history of it being changed, despite full service history.

I collected the car and noticed a strong smell of diesel/fumes - upon further investigation it came to light that it was suffering from the black death and it had burnt through the injector cover - the garage agreed to fix it and they completed the work yesterday - admitting it was really bad and appears they had been leaking for a long time.

I checked the injectors before embarking on a long drive last night and they were clean but the cover had not been replaced so that still has a hole in but either way it proved they had cleaned the mess.

Driving something felt 'off' but I put it down to not trusting the car yet and it being the first long drive. There was a ticking sound which sounded like it was coming from the front passenger side, potentially wheel but again I put it down to potential debris and nothing too serious. The sound was only audible whilst accelerating and not overly loud or cranky.

Then coming up the motorway around 65mph, about 2 hours into the journey after it had, had the injector clean, I got a sudden warning light come on with text on the screen saying 'engine malfunction service now' the car then immediately went into a limp mode state and chugged when I pressed the accelerator to try and find somewhere safe to stop. This lasted around 20-30 seconds before I knew it wasn't going to make it very far and could feel it losing power.

Pulled over on the hard shoulder and turned it off, tried to re-start but there was nothing from the engine - all the electrics came back on - lights, music playing, windows and doors all working, hazards etc but no sound from the ignition/engine at all.

Breakdown attended plugged in diagnostics but said the only codes coming back were DPF codes but nothing that should cause the engine to not turn over. They stated they did not believe it was related to the injector issue it has had, but did say it still smells strongly of diesel. They stated it sounded like a severe mechanical failure.

It is a push start keyless ignition.

After being towed back home - I have tried again a few times - all electrics still coming on but now it immediately says 'ford key free ignition press ok'

I have tried the spare key but the same message appears and still nothing from the engine. Everything is lighting up on the dashboard, mileage, correct fuel gauge etc.

This is now making me think it could be an electrical fault rather than mechanical and with the fact it is not coming back with any major fault codes?

The garage I bought it off have agreed to tow it back and attempt to fix whatever is wrong, however I am now stuck without a car again and curiosity as to what is wrong is taking over also the concern that this could be a sign of further issues.

I did read a similar thread regarding how having windows open when raining can cause an electrical failure to a point where the engine wont turn over and I did have windows open with rain dripping onto the doors due to how strong the fumes were from the injectors.
