8 speed gearbox fault

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I’ve been having trouble with my automatic gearbox lately with rough gear changes and holding onto gears for what appears too long.

Could anyone confirm what fluid is required to change it out? It’s a 2019 2.0 Ecoblue 8-speed auto.

Also, if anyone could confirm the correct procedure to carry out after resetting the TCM gear changes through Forecan?

Would like to start with these before anything else. The car has covered 74k miles.

Thanks!

That can point to bad fluid, especially with that much mileage.

MERCON ULV. NOT LV! Mannol 8222 is a good substitute.

Buy 8 litres

Reset adaptive shift strategy AFTER changing the fluid.

You will only get half out so, with that much mileage, I would drain and fill, run the car up to temperature and drive ensuring it gets into 8th gear, then drain and fill again.

Then reset *****

Get yourself set up on FORScan with either the recommended V-Linker or OBDLink-EX cable

Go into service & maintenance

Select TCM

Reset transmission adaptive shift strategy.

Make sure your battery is also in good condition, low voltage can cause shift/pump issues

If you fit a new battery, take the opportunity whilst in FORScan to reset the BMS and adjust the maximum charge level to 95% in BMS

Also, being a 2019 I would strongly recommend booking into Ford and getting the software updated in the PCM & TCM too

Sorry, you obviously can't abbreviate Adaptive shift Strategy, but that's what I mean

reset

Thank you again Dave, informative as always!

Once reset, I’ve seen an old post from yourself regarding a procedure where you reset it but then need to run up to set speeds and set gears afterwards. Or can I just reset and go as normal?

I'm not sure with the 8s

I know on the BMWs you just drive as normal and it adapts again

Quick dig found this

  1. Reset Method (Choose One):

    • Scanner: Connect a scan tool to the OBD2 port, navigate to the transmission menu, and select "Clear Adaptations" or "Reset Transmission Adaptive Memory".

    • Battery Disconnect: Disconnect the negative battery cable for 15–30 minutes.

  2. Initial Calibration: After reconnecting the battery, turn the ignition to the "ON" position for 1-2 minutes without starting the engine to let the electronics initialize.

  3. Idle/Warm-up: Start the engine and let it idle for 5-10 minutes with your foot on the brake, allowing it to reach operating temperature.

  4. Adaptive Drive Cycle:

    • With your foot on the brake, shift through all gears (P-R-N-D-S) slowly, waiting 5 seconds in each gear.

    • Drive the vehicle normally, allowing it to perform gentle upshifts and downshifts.

    • Avoid aggressive acceleration for the first 24-48 hours.
