2014 Focus diesel - temp gauge not reaching expected temp

Our car has just been for MOT, the chap took it for a drive to warm the engine and bring the emissions down (not sure the technical reason, but it worked!). He noticed the temp gauge was reading lower than expected ... could this be causing other issues such as affecting performance or fuel economy? I'm a bit skint (aren't we all!), so don't want to pay the £100+ diagnosis charge unless it's worth it. Thanks.

    It'll be the thermostat stuck open. But you're not losing enough MPG to make it financially 'worth' fixing.
