Steering rack pre load adjustment

Featured Replies

Hi all I have a slight knock from the steering rack on my 2014 focus 1.6tdci and was wondering if anyone on here has tried adjusting the pre load nut as I believe this is where the knock is coming from. Any help would be great thanks

All Focus MK3/MK3.5 except the manual 5-Speed transmission 1.6 TI-VCT versions have the full electric EPAS power steering.

The EPAS steering rack is not adjustable, so setting the preload is not possible. At least not without fully disassembling and rebuilding the steering rack. Considering the complexity of these EPAS steering racks, they are not considered to be a serviceable item. In case of wear the EPAS steering rack should just be replaced.

I must say that excessive play or knocking of an EPAS steering rack is quite uncommon. Most that need to be replaced suffer from water ingress or electronic failures.
