FORSCAN REPORT

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I feel vibration/misfire at 55mph plus driving my 2017 Ecoboost C Max 1.0 with a 2025 replacement engine. So i thought I would run a scan. The report is below/attached. Is there anything that could possibly explain the vibration or what feels like a misfire of some kind. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Probably stating the obvious here but Forscan hasn't detected any misfires at all.

If it's a speed related issue, rather than rev related, then it's much more likely to be a drivetrain fault. Wheel balance check is likely to be the cheapest and easiest place to start. Potentially wheel bearing, warped disc/hub, driveshaft intermediate bearing, or worst case gearbox/diff.

I don't know why the Camshaft Advance/***** Mode 6 Tests are showing as not ready.

You should be able to Live Monitor them to see if you can get any reading, If there was no reading when Live Monitoring then I would be suspicious but I don't know what the implications are.

Thanks. I got the wheel balance checked/done. The brake pedal does not pulsate so I dont think it's a warped disc/hub. I tried removing the offside driveshaft to check it properly but it 'wheel side' wouldn't come out of the hub! I have new driveshafts but may now have to purchase hubs as well. I pray its not the gearbox.

Thanks. I shall try live monitoring as you suggest, then update. Thankfully, the camshaft VVC sensors do not seem to be expensive, if they should be needed (I remember transferring them from the previous engine that smashed itself up following oil pressure loss)

Update. We did a live test today and did not get any readings. Took one solenoid off the car and found the centre pin to be loose (rattling in and out) but not knowing if it's meant to be that way, I have ordered new solenoids and will carry out some tests (and compare to new) over the coming weekend.

Good luck! It’s a nightmare trying to pin down an unknown issue when you’ve tried most of the obvious! Fingers crossed nothing too pricey for you

Update. New Cam solenoids made no difference in FORSCAN but, guess what? The vibration that was the mystery turned out to be rear wheels that were out of balance, despite the tyres being new and recently installed! Fuel consumption is about 49mph on motorway which I think is to high for a 1l engine but maybe it's meant to be that way. Only 'thing' left is the auxilliary coolant pump sometimes (more often than not) running on after engine is turned off (temperature gauge seems normal and there are no other signs of overheating; coolant temp sensor is new). Could it be the temp sensor on the cylinder head that's triggering the aux pump? Not too much of a bother but the pump will run on for several minutes (5-10) then stop. One day I had the bonnet open when the aux pump was running after a journey, with the engine off. I was about to close the bonnet when there was a clearly audible click (like that made by a relay) from the area of the coolant reservoir (or that side of the engine bay) and the aux pump stopped running. I looked but could not find anything to connect to the sound...I shall open the bonnet again and pay more attention the next time the pump runs on. Good day folks!

This is intended operation, it is not a fault. The electric coolant pump is active when the engine temperature is still above a certain value when the engine is shut off.

Hi, Thanks. But it only started when I recently (after I replaced the Cam solenoids). Does it work on coolant temp or cylinder head temp...and also, do you know what the value is that triggers it?

I think the two things are unrelated but if the cam timing is now right, the engine is likely to be running at the right temperature, which it might not have been doing before. A C-Max is a very big thing for a litre of engine to push through the air at motorway speeds. Above 56 MPH in still air, most of your fuel is being used to overcome drag and 49 MPG is not unreasonable. Set off earlier, keep to 55 and that MPG figure will be over 60.
