Glue on CV boot

Featured Replies

Evening Guys. Anyone tried glue on CV boots? Are they any good please?

My experience has been that they don't last and are difficult to do properly and keep the glued together bits free from grease whilst gluing and I've used them more than once.

Others may have had a different experience.

I fully agree.

Fitting the split/joint CV boots properly is usually a pain in the rear. Obtaining a clean, decent bond is quite difficult and I have seen them fail or come loos quite a few times.

Another point of concern can be accessibility. On some vehicles the space is extremely limited which makes proper installation almost impossible.

I still prefer to remove and disassemble the driveshaft to do the job properly.

My experience was even worse than theirs...couldn't get the damn thing to seal at all.

However, stretchy boots work well and save having to remove the joint. They also seem to last longer due to the stretchy material not drying and cracking as quickly as standard aftermarket versions.

Stretch boot you say. That sounds good. Certainly better than having to strip it all out to fit a new one on.Or try to glue one which won’t stick

To fit a stretch CV boot you still have to disassemble the driveshaft from the wheel hub. You also need a pneumatic boot expander to expand the boot to go over the joint.

It is basically only one circlip less work from taking apart the CV joint.

When taking apart the CV joint, you also have the possibility to replace the grease inside the joint. This will drastically improve the life expectancy of the joint/driveshaft.

I must say that the stretch CV boots are usually better quality than the normal aftermarket CV boots. However, I still prefer the original Ford CV boots. These are known to last extremely long.

The ones I bought just get stretched over a fixed cone which was supplied with the first boot. No additional tools needed. I found it far less messy due to not handling the CV joint at all and not losing any gearbox oil by removing the full shaft.
