MK2 1.6TDI engine malfunction when doing a hill start

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I've got a 2011 MK2 focus 1.6tdi that gives me the engine malfunction warning on the dash most times I do a hill start. Then there is a good bit less power, but the car still drives. It also happens sometimes when I take off quickly on the flat. If I stop the car then for about 10 minutes, it starts working again until the next hill start.

No engine codes are showing on the built in dtc code reader in the dash and no codes showed on a very cheap obd reader either.

Turbo seals seem to be gone as there is oil in the intake. I've taken the car for a few long spins at high rpm as well to regenerate the dpf. Also took out the egr and soaked that in white spirits.

I know about the issue with the solder joints in the instrument cluster and I plan on looking at that this weekend. I'm also considering pulling out the dpf. Any other ideas what could be causing this?
