Engine bearing.

Featured Replies

Hello.

I have been advised that there is an engine bearing going in my Ford Fiesta Zetec S, and that it would cost upwards of £1500 to fix, as the engine needs to be removed and sent away to be fixed. Has anyone else had this issue, and is that really the only way it can be resolved? My car is a 59 plate, so I'm thinking it won't be worth fixing at that price.

Hi,

Engine bearings are deep inside the engine. They do take a lot of time to access and replace.

However the engine doesn't need to be removed or sent away. If you can find a garage who can repair engines themselves that could save you a bit of money.

There isn't any alternative. Once they've worn out the only option is to replace them.

You could have another, lower mileage, used engine fitted, though that is a risk as you don't know how long that one might last.

£1500 is actually very good value for a full engine rebuild as well as removal and refitting. That's more like the cost for a gearbox rebuild. I don't want this to sound patronising but is it definitely an engine bearing and not a gearbox bearing? What type of noise is it making?

Yeah, I'd be getting a second opinion as to whether it is actually a main bearing going down or something else.

Has the car been abused?

Got poor or no service history?

Very high mileage?

Been run low on oil?
