Another impressive model of a very impressive aircraft, Ian.

Bit of a thirsty beast as I recall, hence the overwing tanks presumably.

Thanks Eric, yes the fuel tanks added extra range, using the fuel out them first, then if needs be fire off the tanks if they have to attack, here's a pic of another F6 with the same setup and white tanks too.

Ian,

That is very impressive!

Nice model but the Lightning never looked its best with those over-wing tanks fitted. That's not a criticism of the model making skills here. As others have said, the Lightning would get through its fuel at an alarming rate on full power and as an interceptor, it spent a lot of time at full power.

Stretching the topic a little - in the 1960s we used to go to the air displays held at RAF Church Fenton, where I saw Lightnings and other contemporary stuff, plus Spitfires, etc. Exciting stuff for a young lad!

Now Leeds East airport, it has more recently hosted "Flying Legends" displays (more Spitfires, etc!)

This site includes details of the programme for various displays:

and I recently stumbled across this showing rather sad pics of the buildings after the RAF left:

Indeed it does look an odd bod with them fitted but this is my third 1/32nd Lightning, previous ones having the tanks not fitted, so with this one I decided to fit the tanks to make it look totally different to the others.

In the 1970's early 80's it was great to watch the Lightnings fly around Lincolnshire, all coming from RAF Binbrook but the best times was over Mablethorpe! The pilots used to do free air shows, flying along the coastline or out to see or back in, doing things only the Lightning could do.

We visited RAF Binbrook around 2000 and it was similar there, just ghosts and run down buildings everywhere but there is a living fire breathing Lightning F6 which is kept in lovely condition and fully runs up.
