Mk 2 wishbone joint removal - stuck ball joint bolt

Featured Replies

Tried getting it off this evening. No such luck. The 21mm nut will not move, even after being soaked in penetrating oil.

Any suggestions? Cut it off? Use a nut splitter? I need to get it off ASAP tomorrow so I can carry on with the rest of the work I need to do.

If the balljoint has been there so long that the nut is rusted on then it is probably due for a change anyway. If you can get an angle grinder in then grind the nut away until it can be unscrewed. If not, nut splitters are of limited use and often difficult to put in place so it is out with the hacksaw, I'm afraid unless you have one of those funky induction heaters, of course.

These nuts are usually Nyloc so no amount of penetrating fluid will help. I'd suggest more leverage by adding a second spanner or scaffold bar or whatever you've got to hand.

Blowtorch directed on the nut for a minute or so should release it.

Take care not to melt any rubber not being replaced!
