2006 Focus engine replacement

Featured Replies

Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows of a garage in the Basildon area who can provide and fit a new engine. My pistons blew, but I don't want to get rid of my car.

Replacing the engine in a 20-year-old car is usually not economically viable.

Both a brand-new engine and a remanufactured engine will likely cost several times more than the car itself is worth.

Your most realistic option would be a used engine from a scrapyard or donor vehicle. Prices typically range from around GBP 250 for a well-used example without any warranty to GBP 1,500 for a clean, low-mileage example with some warranty. Keep in mind, however, that even these engines are at least 15 years old.

If you go this route, it is strongly recommended to replace wear items during installation, such as the timing belt, clutch, water pump, seals, and other age-sensitive components. Labor costs can also be significant, since engine replacement is time intensive work.

Before committing, it’s worth doing the math carefully to make sure the project does not turn into a money pit. Investing thousands into a car that, even after repairs, is only worth a few hundred simply does not make financial sense.

Unless the car has strong sentimental value or is particularly rare, putting that amount of money into a major repair like an engine replacement is usually difficult to justify economically.
