18Tdi Economy

Featured Replies

Hi

I know its very early days, I have only done 371 miles in my new (used) Focus, and the economy worked out at 36 mpg...and that is a round trip commute

of 140 miles(2 days) all on the M4.where I would have expected 50 mpg

I normally drive at 70-80 mph the car has done 68K I have plans to clean the injectors this weekend..

anything else I can do to raise the economy?

Im not overly worried about the economy yet as its only run 3/4 tank of fuel.

Just used the first tankful in my new (used) tddi - Bristol -> Swindon commute - crusing at 75-80 on the speedo, worked out around 50mpg.

Regular oil changes and filters (every 4k - 5k). Renew spark plugs & HT leads (depending on age). Some other preventative maintenance tasks would be changing the fuel filter, cleaning the EGR valve and cleaning the injectors although it would take a specialist to clean those properly. Unless you added a injector cleaning treatment to your fuel.

It's a diesel H3lly!

I find driving style can make a substantial difference. With our 1.8 TDCi I try to change up at or below 2000rpm as this is where the turbo starts to kick in. On a long main-road trip I have managed to push it up to 55mpg (on the trip computer, that is) but for most of our motoring it hovers around 47-48. Running at fairly constant low speeds on local roads pushes it up quite smartly. A couple of trips into town, when it doesn't get properly warmed up, and it drops like a stone, also if I get a bit too enthusiastic with the turbo.

So accelerate gently, avoid over-use of the brakes and moderate your speed and you'll be surprised what you can achieve - if you can stand the boredom! Also make sure your tyre pressures are correct as under-inflation increases rolling friction.

When we first got our Focus I did a tank-to-tank check of the mpg and found that our trip computer was fairly accurate, within about 1mpg. I tend to leave it displaying mpg to remind me not to get too excited. :P

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a 1.8TDDI with 161,000 on the clock with a full service history, i frequently get 50mpg.

On one run back to Derbyshire from Somerset i got nearly 65mpg, although that was at less than 56mph, just to see what she would do.

Treat them well and they will keep going for ages.

My average on a 1.6 (when I am really good!) I have seen 80mpg! feck only knows how!

On average, I tend to get about 46, but I do get quite heavy footed. my last tank with a heavy foot met 42.4 mpg, on average I can get about 48, I havent yet changed anything like plugs, leads, etc (mainly because I dont have a clue how yet!). Good Old Diesel, oh wait, I just remembered DPF... Damned Diesel...

ive got a 2005 2.0TDCI Titanium Saloon....my MPG hovers between 46-52mpg. I regularly put some red x in which keeps the injectors clean etc, also keep a close eye on tyre pressure as that can drop ya MPG loads. I red line it every so often as diesels need that to clear out any cr*p. i get it into 6th as quickly as posible and keep the torque down low, avoiding the turbo. Sometimes it can take a car thats new or recently bought a while to settle to your style of driving. if the previous owner used to boot it everywhere you almost have to retrain the engine to a more economicly style of driving.

Also if diesel always use Shell V-power, this makes a genuine difference. might be 10p more per gallon but you get that back in ya MPG.

Urban run i used to get 44mpg and on the motorway i could get 55 :)

Just used my first tank full on my newly acquired 1.6tdi 110 (58) plate 2009 Focus.

It has 26k on the clock and is fitted with Michelin eco tyres.

I got a recorded 660 miles and I squeezed £60 into the tank @ 133p a Ltr.

That’s 45.1 Ltrs. = 9.9 Gallons = 66.6 miles to the gallon.

I’m very pleased with the economy and the performance of the new tdi engine and with Road Fund License at only £30.00 a year... does motoring get any cheaper?

Up until the DPF goes...

There is very little good information on the DPF fitted to the later Foci.

The hand book makes no mention of the DPF requiring additives or a service, it just states that the DPF is self-regenerating and don't park over dry leaves. I was told by the 'trusty' main dealer that the new DPFs are good for at least 80k of normal driving.

The plan in the back of my mind is to have it bypassed and the engine management modified at some time in the future.

I do have a post somewhere (Here in fact) It looks like it could affect the emissions, so I will see what effect it will truely cause before I go ahead, I would rather pay 300 to remove the DPF and then an extra £50 on emissions than to pay £1000
