Focus 1.8 Tddi Gearbox Noise

Hi all,

I really need some advice. I have a Focus 51 plate 1.8 TDDI Ghia. I took it in for some work on the rear end. The mechanic (a family member,)asked me to listen to the gearbox. With the car on the lift and the wheels free, he turned the wheels and there was a grating noise from the gearbox. He started the car and put it in 2nd and let out the clutch and there was the grating noise again. He said that the gearbox was shot. The car is still under warranty so I called them and they asked me to take it to their specialist gearbox place. They said that they looked at it and they said it was the clutch not the gearbox. Who do I believe? I cant wait and see what happens as the warranty expires in 4 months.

    It could be the clutch bearings wearing out.

    Have you ever heard a worn wheel bearing ?

    If you have you will know it sounds quite similar.

    Since its under warranty there at liberty to replace any faulty parts, so if they replace the gearbox and realise its the clutch, they need to replace the clutch too! I dont know what the costs are with warranty repairs, but I am 99% sure that the repair is free! (potentially you only have to pay labour?)
