Thottle Problem - Help!

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been talked about before, but couldnt find anything in the searches.

I have just bought a 1999 1.8 petrol focus zetec from a friend. The car has been in storage for 2 months. But driving it home from his place to mine (180miles) I noticed a problem. When changing gear I get a slow de throttle response, resulting in a rev spike every time i de clutch. At first I thought it was my driving, but I had a mate drive it today with the same results. I did check the throttle cable to see if it was sticking but can conform that the throttle cable is ok with no binding. The car runs and starts fine other wise and but this one has me scratching my head. The mate who I bought the car from said it never had the problem before it went into storage.

Any ides?

Most likely its the storage that caused the problem. When left for months without use, the likes of the fuel become very heavy, and you can get some deposits form. How much fuel is in the tank? I would pop some engine treatment into the tank and run it through (even if there is only half or less fuel!) that will clear the fuel tank / lines / engine block.

Also check the oil as it will probably need replacing.

Overall, give it a good service and you will most likely find the vehicle improves.

  • Engine Treatment
  • Coolant Change

check the idle speed when warmed up i should be 700 plus minus 30 rpm if its higher either the butterfly valve is sticking open slightly or the throttle stop screw has been adjusted to even out the rpm problem with this is the revs hang when changing gear and when slowing to a stop if alls ok may need checked out but the above is really a must
