Hi Everyone,

Had a few problems with my car in the past couple of weeks which I've only had about 5/6 weeks.

Was running sluggish and I had the Engine Management Light come on so I took it to my local garage who suggested it may have been the fuel filter so they changed that and it ran fine for a few days until said light came back on.

I took it back to the garage, they ran a diagnostic (for free) and came back with about 10 different codes. They were unable to pinpoint a problem here as they thought some of the codes may have been old ones. They suggested they cleared the codes, and when the light came back on to take it in. The light came on the next day, so I took the car back in and the code that came up related to a problem with the EGR valve.

The mechanic said it there was a high build up of carbon (think this is due to the car being sat for a while before I bought it) so he put some treatment in and told me to give it a good run out and be a bit heavy on the revs and dont fill up the car until the light came on to see if this solved the problem.

Did as I was kindly told, and for the past week the Engine Management System light hasnt come on at all. Until this morning.

My main quesiton is- will another blast of treatment and high revving help or am I likely to have to replace the EGR?

Also, throughout all of this the other "warning" light - the red exclamation mark with cog shape around it intermittently comes on and if I switch the engine off and re-start it disappears for a couple of days - anyone have any ideas around this?

Sorry folks if this sounds like I'm waffling - would appreciate some response if possible?

Cheers!

You can remove and clean the EGR valve, there is a thread somewhere here with a link to a youtube video showing just how to do it. could save you buying a new one for now, otherwise consider the DPF, if its a high mileage vehicle has the DPF been changed / got sufficient EOLYS fluid in? wont make that much of a difference but EGR valve and the DPF are all on the exhaust system so could be choking the engine.

Sorry - should have said that its the 1.8 TDCi and if I remember correctly they dont have a DPF?

i have a 2006 of the same engine, and no they apparently dont have a DPF...well happy in my own opinion.

anyways back to topic. as jee says clean your EGR, but personnaly i would look at the condition of your air filter. then i would check to see if the MAF is working as it should first. i say this because its the easier job and would make sense.
