Focus Tddi Turbo Problems

Featured Replies

Hi, newbie here with a few problems and looking for some advice please. I've got a 2000 x-plate Focus tddi that blew the turbo recently. Lots and lots of clouds of blue smoke when the turbo was boosting but apart from that still ran fine. When i got the turbo off, the shaft pretty much broke in 2 so the turbo definitely was the problem.

I managed to get hold of a cheap turbo but unfortunately it also had a small amount of play in it but stupidly decided to fit it anyway and as expected it still smoked on boost. But also had a metal on metal type of squealing sound when boosting too.

I then bought a decent second hand turbo that came with warranty and has zero play in it (it fitted to the exhaust manifold but as i haven't taken the exhaust manifold off i've only used the turbo). After fitting the new turbo it now doesn't smoke at all and is really responsive on revving, but when boosting it is still doing this high pitch metal on metal squealing sound. The noise is definitely coming from the back of the engine so my assumption is as the turbo doesn't bolt in, that it hasn't been pushed in quite straight and that the vanes are rubbing against the exhaust manifold. Does anyone have any ideas of what else could be causing this noise please? Or if anyone has any great ideas of how to press the turbo into the manifold with the manifold fitted to the engine please?

I then had a go at removing the exhaust manifold to try and press the turbo into it out of the car but there's at least 2 exhaust manifold bolts i can't get to so any ideas of how to get the manifold off would be greatly appreciated too please? I gave up in a heap of stress in search of beer when trying to undo one of the 4 manifold to downpipe bolts snapped an extension bar!

Any help and advice would be much appreciated please, cheers.

Dave
