Mk7 95Ps (6.5K Miles, 6Mth Old) Tdci "whirring" On Idle

Featured Replies

Hi all

My fez has developed a low-pitch "whirring" noise on idle that seems to increase in pitch as the revs increase until about 2000 when it drops out altogether (or could just be drowned out by the engine noise - hard to tell)

Anyway i am trying to diagnose if it's normal (this is my first diesel) This is what I have tried thus far:

- Noise happens in or out of gear, and with clutch up or down, stationary or moving.

- Noise only happens once the engine is warm (or has been running for about 10 mins).

- Car has climate - I tried turning it off altogether with no effect on the noise.

- Noise is not the cooling fan (happens when it is off)

I do a lot of engine braking (just my style) and tend to drive quite low revs (1500 is normal for me) - could I have damaged the engine in some way?

I have had a listen under the bonnet but its difficult to determine where the noise is coming from (the engine bay is so jam packed with bits!)

Is this a common thing? Anyone else with the 95PS engine have this?

I dont know if it is related, but periodically (particularly in hot weather) I get a "burning clutch" type smell but its difficult to pinpoint where it is coming from. I think this could just be the DPF regenerating though?

I believe you're right about the smell - not sure about the noise though, are you able to record it?

Hi and thanks for your response.

I recorded it this morning on the way to work, but havent yet had chance to put it up on here. I'll do that as soon as I get home this evening :)

Again, thanks!

just had a call from the ford garage - its the water pump. needs a new one (could also explain smell maybe, if its running hot!!)

From the sound in those videos I believe you may need a new water pump.

EDIT: Oh look I was right ;)

(Wonder if I fooled anyone?)
