Exhaust Smell

Featured Replies

Hi all need advice. My focus has been smelling of gas lately mainly on a cold start. The car is performing ok. I've never come across this before any ideas of what this problem may be.

Perfectly normal mate catalytic converters work best when their hot to be doubly sure you could put in a dose of redex or stp petrol engine cleaner in the next fill of petrol to clean the engine in case your jets are dirty, the engine could be using more petrol to compensate for the micron blockage in the pipes,

Thanks Lenny I have noticed it has been using a bit more fuel. I will use the additive you suggest and see if that helps .

remember a cold start means the auto choke is on so its putting more fuel in and seeing as the exhaust etc is cold it will smell of gas as long as its only when cold and not warm i wouldnt worry

Can't say I've noticed the gas smell when its warm. Isn't it funny how you suddenly notice something that's probably been there all the time, think its probably paranoia in my case. haha. Thanks guys. Zev

No problem, happy to help please note to read the instructions on the bottle prior to use, the STP type you put in the whole bottle, and the redex you have to measure the dose, and the more petrol you put in with the mix the better it will clean, also keep an eye on your oil for the duration of the tank, as it may use more during this period,

My mate bought the redex and put in the whole bottle at once to a half tank in his 1990 corsa, then drove off from the petrol station about 2 minutes later he checked his mirror and saw a trail like a jet engine on the road of whit fog coming from the exhaust,

so more is not always better dose as guided on the bottle.

lol I have put in a dose of redex before, I put the full bottle into a full tank, and it worked well, but putting it into a half tank - brave fellow!
