Total newbie. I have recently purchased a 2002 focus estate cl 1.8tddi, it has done alot of miles 200k+ but came with full ford dealer history.

It has developed a knocking noise from the engine bay. When I am coasting (not touching any pedals) and the car starts to slow on its own the knocking happens, seems to be faster if I'm going fast and slows down when the car slows....so its in sync with the car speed by the sound of it.

It seems to go away when I accelerate and also under breaking there is no knocking, just happens when coasting/slowing naturally. Happens on all road types, rough/smooth, uphill/downhill.

Please help, is it safe to drive? What could this be?

are we sure its from the engine and not the gearbox? as im assuming youre coasting out of gear? engine noises are notoriously difficult to track down as they resonate through almost anything making you think its something its not if you are worried ide suggest having it checked out but before you do just make sure theres nothing thats loose and possibly knocking

Issue now resolved, it turned out to be 2 loose wheel nuts on the passenger side front wheel. I did have new wheels put on a few days before. Tightened up the loose ones and all noises knocking is gone. So glad this turned out to be simple. Now I have to go shout at the muppet that put the wheels on.

jesus that could have been nasty youll likely get the we recommend you recheck them after 100 miles etc etc but in truth if put on at the correct torque they shouldnt loosen.

must admit given youre description of the noise its the last thing on my list ide have checked
