Annoying Grinding Noise From Steering Column

Featured Replies

Hi all, I could do with a bit of advice please :)

I have done a search and came across some old posts of people having the same problem, but there was no mentioning of their findings.

My car is a 51 plate MK5 1.25 Zetec 5 door, basically, when I turn the steering wheel it sounds like plastic scraping together. It just came from no where, I went for a bit of a drive tonight and I park it on the drive and there it is. The car can be stationary or moving it doesn't make any difference, it sounds like something is catching almost inside the steering column.

If I fiddle with my indicator stalk, and pull it in towards me (as in for flashing my main-beams) it stops completely. So could this be the indicator stalk broken? The indicators continue to self cancel by themselves.

What's the best way forward? Shall I take off the steering wheel covers tomorrow and have a look to see if anything is catching, or does it sound like I need to replace my indicator stalk?? Any idea on price? Is eBay the best place or somewhere online?

What's your opinions?

Dan :)

Well that's strange, just been out with my screwdrivers and tools ready to take the column covers off, and my old man said to show him so he can have a listen because he said his car does it at times and then it goes. So I start the car and turn the wheel, and it's gone.

I guess I'll just wait to see if it comes back and if it does get everything taken apart while the noise is there so I'll hopefully be able to find whatever intermitent thing it is. Maybe a peice of dirt or something got into the steering column or lodged inside the stalks. No idea, I guess that's possible considering I have a dead insect stuck in my speedo behind the glass :D.
