Ford Fiesta Stuttering/missfire

Featured Replies

Got a fiesta Mk6 (53 reg) 1.4 16v Zetec with 86k miles on the clock

Had a Miss-fire on it 3 or 4 months back which caused engine light to flash and put car into limp mode.

Called AA and they diagnosed it to be coil pack but in fact when he took off engine cover it turned out it was water build up around plugs and ht leads as washer jets leak rainwater and drops into spark plug well.

I dried it all out and then sealed around the washer jets using silicon sealant and to date had no problems. However a couple of weeks back I was sat in traffic and the revs started to dip bounce but only for a few seconds – thought nothing of it but checked plugs and leads for water and all dry so I assumed maybe some dirty fuel and problem didn’t return.

Anyway this morning my wife was driving it and she phoned me to say it was stuttering again whilst sat at lights and also intermittently in 2nd gear & 4th gear but only intermittently. Engine light as not lit up on dash.

I will check plugs & leads for water when I get home but could this point to being coil pack?

Plugs were changed in January when serviced.

Any advice appreciated please

Sounds like a coilpack to me!

I had to replace the coil pack on my mk6 fiesta 1.4 zetec 2005 at around 75,000

common areas on the sigma engines that could cause that are:

coilpack

MAF sensor

idle control valve

luckily all of these are cheap and easy to fit yourself

orcomma thanks

do you happen to know where the MAF sensor and idle valve are located on this model fiesta please?

on the 1.25, the ICV is on the front (facing the bumper) part of the block just to the right of the plastic inlet manifold, and is shaped like a small (1-inch diameter) metal cylinder bolted side-on to the engine with a diamond flange and a wire loom into it, and the MAF is a sleeve added to the air duct between the airbox and the engine

i reckon on the 1.4 it will be similar ish.

Hey thanks orcomma

I have a feeling it may be the coil pack but handy to know where other things are in case it’s not – it may even turn out to be my previous problem (water in spark plug well) as I recall we had some heavy rain the other night but wouldn’t have thought water would get in after my last efforts with the sealant gun! Will pop hood when I get home and have a look.

Let you know and thanks for your help

cheers

Just been out to look. Spark plugs all ok no water. Warmed it up and revved it a little and sounds like exhaust blowing! Checked underneath and at front of back box it is dripping water. Going to take it for a drive later and check again but reckon this could be my problem, could this cause a miss fire though. It seems to idle fine just sounds like a miss fire or blow when i rev it!!

forget the exhaust post above as this has dried out after a drive! It Missfires all the time while driving now and engine management light started flashing on a couple of times then went off! but didnt stay on and no dtc codes recorded. suppose its a case of trial/error but do i try the coil pack 1st? Or leads or could it even be a plug if so how do find ouy which plug? Would i not have starting issues if coil?

Mine done the same, engine management light came on and off, 99% sure it will be the coilpack!

ok cheers. Btw where did u get coilpack from? I have seen some on euro parts (£30) but also heard that its wise to stick with genuine ford one as some coilpacks from other manufacturers can be crap. Have seen some genuine ford ones on internet one was £100+ and another £50. I can fit myself but dont wanna fork out too much on part but then i suppose u get what u pay for!

Mine was from a general motor place, wash a Bosch tho try and get a Bosch or a known brand, it was £40 iirc

Edit: there's one on eBay for £35

My local Euro Car parts have stock of a Bosch Coil Pack

Going to try this hopefully sort my problem. If not then I suppose it will be down to the HT Leads or plugs

gREAT!!!! picked up bosch coil pack from euro parts as per the part no etc on their website for my model - even typed in the reg plate. Got home went to fit and the pin connection is different to the Motorcraft one already fitted. DOuble checked with the plug but no way this is going to fit onto the bosch coil. No got to faff about returning this one and sourcing another.

sucks when that happens.

what i do is take the actual faulty part to a good motor factors and say "can i have one of those"

Yep did that this morning and he said he had had that issue b4. The bosch type is for the facelift model i think! Anyway he swapped me for the correct part, all fitted now and hey presto its running like a dream.....yippee cheers all :-)

  • 3 months later...

I have a 1.4 duratec SILVER.

I have problems 'getting off' at a junction/traffic lights etc.

There is no power, and when i put my foot down, the car makes abit of noise but doesn't go! Then maybe in 3rd or 4th gear, it goes.

The engine sounds ever so slightly louder than standard.

What could this be? Do i need to do anything to the engine?

Much appreciated guys
