Idleing Problem

hi again all...hope u r all having a fab holiday season.

i am having a problem trying to solve an issue i have with the idleing speed on my escort...my mechanic is very busy at the mo', so i am trying to make sense of it myself.

the problem.....for example, when i am waiting at a red light and have just taken my foot of the gas pedal, the engine is still revving at just under 2000 revs for about 10/20 seconds...when it returns to about normal, it is still a little erratic.

my car is a 1.8 ghia, but when pulling off, it seems " laboured". i have had a lot of 1.8's in my driving career, the power does not seem correct for a 1.8....when i take my foot of the gas pedal while moving, after a second, the car lurches back..it is really starting to annoy me now!...i dont think its the accelerator cable, but i am no mechanic.

i have put new "pro-spark" ignition leads, and motorcraft plugs in...still no joy.

might it be the points?.

i hope i have explained the problem clearly enough, and hope you guys and gals can help.

    butterfly valve on the carbs is sticking or the idle control valve needs cleaned or replaced which will cause over fuellin. plugs and leads wont effect idle in the way you describe the valve and the butterfly on the carb will

    thanks artscot for your reply...i think i will let my mechanic have a look at the butterfly/idle control valve situation, i dare not have a go! :D
