Middle Brake Light Mkiv

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've a MKIV Fiesta but the middle brake light has been removed. In order for the car to pass it's NCT (MOT) I need to refit one.

Does anyone know how to wire one of these?

I know that I need to splice into the nearside main brake light wire.

My problem is that there are four connection points on the unit (2 on each side) I don't know which one to link to the main brake light wire.

Also I know I've to attach an earth but and in turn attach that to the body of the car, but again I don't know which point to sue.

Can anyone help? Also if I'm missing anything from the above please let me know!!

Thanks.

I was under the impression you didn't need this to pass a MOT. As long as you have either side working then it's ok.

My last car last year went through a MOT by a dealer with only 3 of the LEDs working on the middle break light.

Hi d2kea,

Unfortunatley in Ireland they test the car based on Manufacturers Specifications. If it came supplied with middle brake light it has to be presented to the test with a working middle breake light.

I've argue the toss with them on this, stating that I can removed it in the car park of the test centre and drive off in a car that's legal as far as the Road Traffic Act is concerned, but it makes no difference!

Hi All,

I'd really appreciate some help on this one.

I have bench tested the unit using a 9v battery and it light up fine.

The problem is I cannot get it to work in the car.

Anyone able to advise on how to wire it in correctly?

the mk4 pre-facelift did not come with a 3rd brake light. is yours a post facelift?

if it's a 1997 then demand the MOT centre to prove that yours should have a 3rd brake light because I suspect they are wrong.

I can only presume it is. She's the Ghia model so perhaps that's the reason. Also the manual provided with the car shows how to replace the bulbs in the centre brake light.

I've already been arguing with the centre and with the Road Safety Authority and come to a dead end.

So I have to get this centre brake light fitted ASAP. I just don't know how to wire it and the thought of paying an Auto-Elec to do it kills me at it would cost more than the value of the car!! Also I intend to change it in a few months but need it on the road until then.

Any one able to advise on how to wire it in correctly?

the loom should be there if it was originally fitted.

otherwise you need to wire the + and - of the centre light, parallel to the + and - of either one of your brake light bulbs

thanks orcomma.

It looks like the original wiring has been removed. All that is left are the holes in the boot where it was fitted to the rear windscreen.

I can see where one of the wires to the near side brake light has been bared back but would you be able to help me identify which wires in the loom are the pos and neg?

I've actually emailed the test centre raising your issue that if the part was fitted by Ford is should have a loom so hopefully I get off the hook, but in the meantime I just want to be prepared.

I'll keep you informed but I don't hold much hope for them backing down!!

the neg can be any connection on the car body (earth)

i cant help with the pos however - im at work at the moment and even so dont have a mk4 handy to check on. try a voltmeter or a haynes diagram

Managed to persuade the Test Centre that the centre brake light wasn't fitted by Ford and therefore shouldn't be part of the test!!

Victory for the common man!!

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice.
