Newbie That Might Have Bought A Duff 1.4Tdci

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Appologies if I'm not posting this in the right section or anything and apologies for not reseaching more before hand but I have a little story to tell.

I purchased a high mileage (105k) 1.4 TDCI on an 07 plate, late Monday night and I have come across 3 niggles which didn't pick up on during my test drive I would like some advice on.

1. I have a rubbing type of noise which seems to be coming from the wheels and it is speed related, low reps at low speed and high reps at high speed. Tracking is spot on and I can't see uneven tyre wear.

2. The car has a slight scracth on the drivers side wheel arch, nothing I saw as too signififcant, but in closer inspection I have found some rust/paint bubbling on the bodywork on the the wheel arch... I was surprised to see this on such a young model, my 04 astra I sold was spotless.

3. On the dashboard where the odometer is, there is a petrol pump icon with an arrow pointing to it, I put £20's of diesel in after I picked up the car because the low fuel light was on, but this icon is still on... does it point to a fault?

I'm really mad with myself for not being more clued up before I parted with my cash and been a bit more thorough but the car was sold as seen - Hpi clear 1 owner with service history.

Any comment appreciated, (apart from calling me a numpty of course :) )

Nots sure which instrument cluster you have, but if the petrol icon with arrow pointing to it is on an LCD display then this is to show what side of the car the filler cap is on!

I to have just bought a fiesta and mine also has the petrol pump icon. All this is is the amount miles you can do on the amount of fuel in your tank.

Thanks Guys, yes... it is the range of the diesel, ha ha... one less thing to gripe about... still got the rust and rubbing noice issue to deal with and I think I've dropped another clanger by buying the car with only 1 key :(

alright mate, i had a smart repair guy come round to respray the bonnet on my dads old merc which had rusted, he said that once a panel starts rustin it near enough impossible to get rid of! strange how its happened on your car as its not that old! my 1996 rover 216 which i just sold never rusted lol

Yep, I'm really surprised too... only thing I can think of is that it's had a knock and not been primed before a repspray?....

Could be my 2nd worst vehicle purchase of all time! :(

could have been, is the tyre noise coming from the drivers front wheel?

It's possible yes... I've been advised to jack each corner of the car up and check if all the wheels are tight to start with.

The guy who sold it to me says it might have been becuase it's been stood for a month, I'm no mecahnic so I can only really look at the basics.

Any advice on what I should look for?

While you've got it jacked up give them a good shake if theres any play it might be a wheel bearing but shouldn't be on a car that young also this would create more of a loud humming noise
