I have an S reg Ford Fiesta (1996). When in 2nd and 3rd gears the gearstick has a tendency to drop into neutral whilst slowing down. Does this suggest I need a new gearbox?

    It might not mean you need a new gearbox it could be loose shift rods (Cannot remember correct name) or something has worked loose

    How many miles has the car been driven.

    Are there any leaks underneath the gearbox area.

    There is no drain plug in that gearbox but if oil has leaked at some point then the level will be low.

    Are there any untoward noises etc

    Does it function well in other gears

    Has any other work been carried out recently around the gearbox area

    Approximately 80,000 miles on the clock. It also starts to slip out of reverse when I am reversing uphill now as well. No sign of any leaks from the car underneath.
