Gps Gizmo's And Heated Windscreens

Morning,

Has anyone experienced any issues with GPS reception and heated windscreens? I'm having problems with a gadget and wonder if it's related.

Phil.

Hi Phil,

I have the heated windscreen in the focus,

And I sometimes use a Tom-tom XL live sat nav, I do find that it takes a little time for the sat nav to locate a signal but once it finds the signal it manages to keep it. I never thought of the heated windscreen being a contributing factor to the signal of the GPS but when ford fit their GPS stereos to the cars they also fit the aerial in to the driver’s side wing mirror at the rear of the glass so the heated windscreen may affect the signal

Heated windscreens can affect reception as the fine mesh acts as a sort of faraday cage.

You should still get a signal but may find it is a bit weaker.

i have used sat nav a few times and this has never been a prob for me i have a front heated screen in a mk7 fiesta

No Probs in mine ethier. I actually have mine resting against the rev counter (prehaps i shouldnt really) Stays still and no horrible satnd strick on window things

GPS won't be affected unless the car has a solar reflective windscreen. But in your case, no Fiesta has this so it must be a fault with your GPS device.

Quick update after finally getting a second this weekend. I've discovered the heated windscreen does work with GPS but it does slow down the time it takes to lock onto satellites. However, in this particular incident (numpty alert incoming!) a bent pin on the connector wasn’t helping. Straightened pin, plugged in and funnily enough it works properly now. Not bad for someone with 15 years in IT, lol. Currently opted to stick the GPS module in the little a-pillar window but wondering about a better position. Anyway, ta for the help the info was hugely useful as always.
