Any ideas why?? looks like old parts on new car, stuffed together to make it run..... even the bottom of the enigne is covered in rust.......

This is very common mate,

And the parts that have surface rust on them would be the original parts from the production line,

Some parts that are in close contact to high levels of heat as much as 800oC will rust within a year of the cars life,

My exhaust manifold is golden brown with rust for example and parts around the turbo.

As a preventive action you could purchase a bottle of WD-40 and spray it on to a J-cloth then wax the areas of the engine with the cloth, dont spray directly on to the engine or parts, just spray on to the cloth then rub in to the parts,

the rust is only surface and I think they may be made of what’s called pig iron which has a level of surface rust but is like new underneath it, a

nd the inside of the parts will still be 100% because they are constantly coated in oil.

If there is any parts that you can remove easily then you could purchase some hammerite Kurust and some enamel paint,Sand them a bit then coat them with the K-rust followed by a coat or two of high heat resistant enamel paint.

many many thanks lenny, i was very suprised with what i saw? could yours be the same then? ive also noticed that wd-40 is like a mans best friend on here lol.... just waiting for some sunny weather then and il have a bash....

Lenny i dont suppose that changing gears is stiffer on a diesel than a petrol? a daft question i know, but this is our first diesel and yeah the gears are quite stiff, and the clutch bites right on top.... any ideas, and once again many many thanks ;-)

to be honest i cant say i noticed the gears any stiffer than the petrol but i do notice that when slowing down,

if you brake and clutch at the same time and put it from 5th to 3rd for example when appraching a roundabout,

then it gets stiff you put it in to third i think its due to the ESP which cut power to the wheels and stuff because when driven with esp off this isint their,

for piece of mind you could take it to the garage and have the clitch tightened a bit and the fluid levels checked out,

and my exhaust manifold is rusty and parts of the turbo,

that is shocking i had an s reg seat cordoba diesel with 147k on the clock and it didnt look like that.

saying that its easily curable get youreself some hycote aluminium engine enamel or hammerite and a pack of fine brushes like kids use to paint the engine enamel is best give the bottom of the engine 3 coats do the top by spraying the paint into the lid and using the brush to do these top parts as you get to the last part the first will be ready for its 2nd coat once you are happy run the engine for 5 mins then switch off the paint will bake leave overnight and it will last a long time.ebay sell the hycote enamel best stuff ive ever used

Yeah it may look bad, but it's just a little bit of surface corrosion on the parts that are made of cast iron. Nothing at all to worry about.

Your car is a diesel, and typically diesel blocks are made of cast iron because it's stronger than aluminium. (Note that in your pics the alloy cylinder head is still shiny). Remember that diesels run at around 20:1 compression ratio whereas petrols run at around 10:1. Also cast iron is cheaper, but on the downside it is heavier.

Some more modern diesels are made of aluminium, but the Ford 1.8 TDCi is just an updated engine from the old Escort and the block is most definitely made of iron!

Perhaps some manufacturers spray a laquer on their iron blocks? Perhaps others don't bother and just fiqure that the plastic cover will stop anyone from noticing?

(Artscot mentioned a Seat Cordobo - basically a VW Polo with a boot instead of a hatch. Maybe that uses an alloy block, and so it would never rust like this. Or maybe the block was laquered)

While this corrosion on your own engone may seem ugly to look at, it's just on the surface and will not affect the life or reliability of the car.

The heat of an engine will of course accelerate this surface corrosion hugely. Next time you have a barbeque chuck a nail into the charcoals and see how rusty it is when everything has cooled down!

If it was me I would just plonk the plastic cover back on and forget about it.

main answer is its a ford, even a brand new car can have rust like that on the wishbone and other suspension components just from sitting on the docks for a long time.

lol, used to be a team of 4 of us and get on average 2 weeks to do a complete refurb on the clothing section. the new builds used take like 3 weeks but there was some hours put in, like 8am-4pm then bk to bed then 9pm-7am used to happen, but only on refurbs when was quietiest with things like the 4mtr rolling walls you have... for 1 day with hours above stated it was like 250 quid.... down side used to be away from home like a month on end, with a very young son and when i was about to pack it in we found out my prartner was pregnant with my daughter, but stayed at it until she was approx 3mth old... tbh i couldnt do it no more was unbelievable strain etc.......

dont suppose you fitted the till hardware as well did you ;) got a few of our customers over in ireland!
