Please can someone tell me where the timing mark which is shown on the pic. Is it on the sump somewhere ?

Turn the crankshaft to TDC on no.1 cylinder. The timing mark should be aligned like in the pic (2)

Thats the problem Im having I can see the two marks on the crankshaft pulley but I cant see where it needs to be aligned to. is it a mark on the sump or engine block ?

Having never done one I can't be sure. But (3) is the crankshaft pulley so it can't be that hard to spot. Make sure you're on TDC at piston 1, it's possible that you could be 180* out so you might not see the marks like in the picture

why not take the spark plug out of cylinder one and put a piece of rod or something down it and turn the engine over by hand, when the rod reaches its highest point you will know its more or less at TDC? and then the marks should line up...

I tryed the screwdriver down the No.1 plug and got it to the highest point and the cms were out but I did manage to find the timing mark on the engine and thats was lined up. So im gonna have to set the cams i think.

its just to the right of the 2nd paint mark.

You've certainly got no compression , have you had the rocker box off to check the actual cam are spinning?

As for timing it's quite simple , drop the bottom pulley off and turn the crank till the wood ruff key is at 12 o'clock , you should then be able to line the 2 cut outs in the cams up , if the cams don't line up you could try slackening the cam pulleys and resetting the timing just to see what happens but you'll probably end up pulling the head off.

I have had the cam cover off and the cams are spinning there is a video on page 2. I will take off the bottom pulley and dp what you said.

Well over the weekend I had another play with the focus. I tryed to set the cams to TDC so I could use the holding bar. So I slackend off the cam sprockets and alligened the slots so that the bar could fit in I had already set the bottom timing using the timing pin. put it all back together and nothing. its still doing the same thing. looks like im gonna have to take the head off.

Ive just done a compression test on car and all 4 spark plugs read 0 the gaugue didnt even move I have the right connector and the compressor works as I tried it on another car is this pointing to internal damage ?

Hey everyone not been on here for a while havent toutched the focus for abit aswell but finally got round to stripping it down. Once I got the head off I found that all 8 of the exhaust valves were bent. So I took the head to a engine specialist to have a look at and they said it will cost me £90 for 8 new valves fitted and a head skim is this a good price ?

Also Ive had the passangers drive shaft apart and there is a problem with the tripod one of the bearing has come off do I need to replace the whole tripod or can I get just a new bearing ?

Anyone ?

£90 seems reasonable for getting new valves and a skim. I would be wanting new inlet valves aswell just to be on the safe side. The one thing you've got to ask yourself is, what caused the valves to bend in the first place?

The 3 bearings on the tripod can be removed and refitted fairly easily. If it's just popped of due to the way you've removed the drivshaft then it should just pop back on. Check is not rough or anything though. If it is I would suggest getting a new tripod. They're not that expensive.

It looks like the belt slipped due to missing teeth so thats whats help to bent the valves. I have checked the piston heights and all look ok so no con rod damage. As with the tripod I was told that you cant buy them seperatly you have to get full drive shaft any ideas where I can get them from ?

Well if that's the cause then a new set of valves and a belt kit should have you sorted ;)

If were both talking about the same thing (cant think of what else it can be) then you can definitely buy them separately.

Any good motor factors will do them. Don't know if there will be a dingbros round your way. They're probably the biggest round my end.

Last night I fitted the gearbox and block back into the car should have head back any day soon then back on with rebuilding it. just need to sort the shafts.

when doing a cv joint how much grease do I need to add to the boot ?

Also in the drive shafts is it only the passanger side that has a circlip goint into transmission end ?

yes the driver side is held in place by the intermediate drive shaft bearing bracket
