Engine Management Indicator And Variator/actuator Issue

I have been getting the engine management light coming on and when it was checked the garage did not have the full Ford updated diagnostic codes for the fault but did say it may be a problem with the variator or activator.

The car drives ok but each time the car starts there is a rattle for a few seconds.

If this is the variator is this expensive to replace and where are these located?

The car is a 55 plate with 72k miles.

any help would be appreciated thanks
