Engine Temps -40C

Featured Replies

So, finaly... FINALY i got my car working again! Nothing beats the feeling you get when the engine comes alive after a swap :)

But, it seemed for me that the engine runned bit rich. It was puffing some smoke, MPG was low and the glowplugs were on for 10sec before the light turned off. Well, after test drive i noticed that the Engine temp meter was hangin on the bottom, so i plugged in my OBD reader, and the engine temp sensor gives out constant -40c reading.

The temp gauge was working fine before i swapped the engine, so i think the engine temp sensor in the new engine is different from what i had on mine (like the crankshaft position sensor, glowplugs, diesel plumbing etc). But, i got no idea where the temp sensor is? I allready tried to plugg out the green sensor near the thermostat, but that seemed to be the sensor for the radiator fan. Then i tried to plug out the green sensor, between A/C pump and the Catalytic converted, but that didnt change anything. running out of ideas, and ive got MOT tommorrow at noon :S

The sensor may be on the head, near the thermostat (my engine differs from yours though)

If your temp reads - 40, its possible the sensor is not connected, you could refit you old one (to be sure it is compatible with your ECU)

It should be, the old one is the one that is supposed to be in the car :)

I dont recall that there were any other sensors on the head appart camshaft pos. sensor, but need to take a closer look at the old engine (while i still have it before it goes to scrap yard).

hmm, after some googling i found out that the temp says -40 if the plug is disconnected... But, when i disconnected the plug from the green sensor (that is supposed to be the temp sensor) the radiator fan kicked in.

When i pulled the plug from the grey sensor at the side of the block, nothing happened. So this one is the real temp sensor?

its not for air inlet temperature is it?
