Fiesta Grinds Into Reverse

Featured Replies

My daughter has a 2011 Fiesta 5 speed standard trans. When you shift into reverse from neutral(when the car is stationary) the gears grind. Is this normal.I have an old bus that grinds in EVERY gear but is its 60 years old and that is what they had back then but I would think in 2011 ALL gears should be synchronized so there is no grinding EVEN in reverse. Am I correct or does reverse not have synchronization.

Thanks

Fred

Going into reverse can cause a grinding noise sometimes for example if you dont allow enough time between changing from a forward going gear to reverse without allowing enough time in neutral. Does it do it if you're parked up and just put it into reverse without it being in any other gear first?

Mine does this a little, also sometimes it wont slip into the position fully and you have to de clutch try again for it to sit right in.My Fiesta 6.5 did the exact same thing.

OK. Thanks. I was under the impression that it SHOULD not grind at any time just like it doesn't grind when you go into ANY of the foreward gears from neutral. I guess the reverse gear does not have synchro rings like the forward gears do.

Thanks for the replies.

Regards

Fred

Yu shouldn't be getting a typical high pitched grind, like you missed the gear when driving forwards, more of a locking in "crunch" sound more than a grind, hard to explain.

Reverse doesn't have a syncro, it's very common for all Ford's to grind when going in to reverse.

^^^^ as above

Best to leave a 3-4 second gap in neutral before going for reverse

I think there has been a previous post on cars jumping out of reverse.

Mine does it infrequently, I get what feels like its in reverse gear sensation then suddenly whilst starting to reverse it make a grinding noise and of course the car stops moving.

Never experienced this before even with my first car a Citroen Diane-tin snail.

Cheers

Martin

Mine, a 1.4 TDCi has issues with me putting it in reverse from cold. takes me three or four attempts to get the stick into gear with a lot of two handed shoving and ramming.

I try really hard not to grind the clutch by making sure it is in gear but it's a pain.

You would think will all the advancements Ford have added to their cars, even in just the past five years, they could make a gearbox that would work smoothly?

The trouble is that we live in a disposable society where those that can afford it change their vehicles before they are out of warranty.

But most of us can't or don't waste money that way, so we have to sort out problems out of our own pocket.

I think it's down to cost cutting and computer design thats to blame here.

Cheers

Martin.
